Thesis topic:
Environmental impacts of electricity and heat production in the Czech Republic from the life cycle perspective
The European Union has set out for a path of low-carbon future. Decarbonisation of energy sector is key to achieve this goal, as it is this sector that contributes most significantly to greenhouse gas production. In the energy sector, information on direct environmental impacts, such as emissions produced from the operation of a given source, is often used to assess the severity of environmental impacts. However, assessing sources on the basis of impact of direct emissions alone may not be optimal and may, on the contrary, lead to misleading conclusions. While the production of electricity from non-renewable sources causes significant environmental impacts, especially in the phase of operation of the source in the form of emissions, for renewable sources a significant part of the impacts is related to the phase of their construction, namely mining and processing of minerals. Other significant impacts are associated with the end of their life cycle in the phase of decommissioning, when individual construction materials are further processed or removed. The dissertation therefore deals with a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts of sources of electricity and heat production in the Czech Republic from the life cycle perspective. The work evaluates the construction, operation and decommissioning of significant non-renewable and renewable electricity and heat sources. The work further assesses aspects of the future transformation of the structure of the energy system, which leads to partial decentralization and change of the fuel base.
