Thesis topic:

Sustainability of shifting to a planetary boundary diet: Consequential Life Cycle Assessment of decreasing animal proteins

To counter climate change and safely feed the growing population, more sustainable food systems are required. By affecting the environment whilst also being impacted by climate change, food systems are simultaneously part of both the problem and the solution. Moreover, as socioeconomic changes continue to develop towards western lifestyles and consumption patterns, environmental pressures are expected only to amplify. At the same time, non-communicable diseases and obesity are raising and thus depicts the necessity of shifting consumption towards more nutritious and environmentally friendly diets. It is now widely recognized that this diet shifting should be in favour of more plant-based products and less animal products. The EAT-Lancet commission developed a planetary health diet combining Earth and human health. The aim of this research is to evaluate the consequences of decreasing the consumption of animal proteins in terms of environmental, nutritional, economic and social point of view, using consequential life cycle assessment.
